Eight-month Pregnant Woman Braves Floodwaters To Reach Relief Centre

HULU LANGAT, Dec 4 (Bernama) -- A woman, who is eight months pregnant, had no choice but to wade through floodwaters to reach the Sekolah Rendah Agama (SRA) Dusun Nanding temporary relief centre near here after her home in the Dusun Nanding area was inundated following continuous downpour from last night.

Biasmaiha Daud, 36, had to walk for one kilometre after her home in Taman Seri Nanding, where she has stayed for just one year, was flooded up to about 0.3 metres since 7 am.

"I waded through the flood with a neighbour, who is four months pregnant. We both decided to get to a safe place in case the water levels rose. Besides, our husbands were out helping other flood victims at that time.

"I only managed to bring along a health book for pregnant women and my identity card after water began to rise at 7 am… this is the first time I have waded through floods as our home was never flooded before,” she said when met by Bernama at the centre today.

Biasmaiha said she is scheduled to deliver next month, although the doctor did say that she might give birth sooner.

Meanwhile, Kajang police chief ACP Naazron Abdul Yusof said the main road in the Dusun Nanding area, which had been closed after the deluge since last night, was reopened to motorists around 4 pm today after the authorities had completed the clean-up works.

Dusun Tua assemblyman Datuk Johan Abdul Aziz, meanwhile, said a preliminary survey of the area found that nearly 50 houses in Kampung Sungai Sop were affected by the flood, with the homes filled with thick mud as the area is located near a slope over 12 metres high.

Johan said that several areas in Dusun Tua have been flooded frequently lately, with some houses being hit more than five times in a month following the construction of a nearby highway wall, leading to repeated flooding.

A Bernama survey found that two temporary relief centres have been opened at SRA Dusun Nanding and Sekolah Kebangsaan Sungai Serai, housing 245 evacuees from 88 families.
