MACHANG, Dec 12 (Bernama) -- A Proton Wira driver's failure to overtake another vehicle is believed to have been the cause of a fatal accident involving a Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) truck at Kilometre 37.8 of Jalan Kota Bharu-Kuala Krai, near Bukit Belah, yesterday.

Machang police chief Supt Ahmad Shafiki Hussin said the 6.35 pm accident involved a three-tonne Hicom truck, carrying four MAF personnel, including the driver, and heading from Tanah Merah back to the Desa Pahlawan Camp in Kok Lanas.

"The car driver, heading from Kota Bharu to Kuala Krai, is believed to have tried to overtake a vehicle and entered the opposite lane, leaving the MAF truck driver with no time to avoid a collision,” he said in a statement today.

Ahmad Shafiki said one MAF personnel died at the scene. The other three personnel, who sustained minor injuries, and the car driver, who was seriously injured, were taken to the Machang Hospital.

The case is being investigated under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, and those with information are urged to contact Traffic Investigation Officer Insp Fatin Nurhanis Ibrahim at 011-1454020 or the Machang Police Headquarters operations room at 09-9751222.
