MBPP Reviews Suitability Of ‘Pet Friendly Mall’ In Gurney Paragon

GEORGE TOWN, Dec 30 (Bernama) — The Penang Island City Council (MBPP) is reviewing the suitability of implementing a 'Pet Friendly Mall' concept at Gurney Paragon Mall, following concerns regarding Islamic sensitivities and broader public interests.

In a statement, MBPP confirmed that a site visit was conducted today at Gurney Paragon Mall, attended by the council’s mayor and representatives. 

It involved discussions with mall management, who presented their current house rules, and both parties explored potential measures to enhance control and enforcement. 

Agreed-upon measures include installing clearer signage in pet-friendly lift areas, setting a maximum pet weight of 15 km, and making the use of a stroller or carrier mandatory at all times.

Pet access will be restricted to only Tuesdays and Wednesdays, with security controls to be strengthened to ensure full compliance with all conditions.

Furthermore, pet owners will be required to use special diapers, only use designated lifts, and ensure proper disposal of animal waste.

MBPP emphasised that the responsibility for enforcing the house rules lies with the shopping complex management, while visitors are urged to maintain public order and hygiene out of consideration for general societal sensitivities.

"Currently, the council does not have a specific bylaw regarding permission for pets in shopping complexes, and is now reviewing the feasibility of its implementation while taking into account public interest and the harmony of our multi-racial society," the statement concluded.
