KL Mayoral Election: Proposal Can Be Raised In Parliament - Fahmi

05/02/2026 08:52 PM

PUTRAJAYA, Feb 5 (Bernama) -- The MADANI Government is open and ready to consider any proposals from the opposition regarding the study on the feasibility of holding a Kuala Lumpur mayoral election, said its spokesperson, Datuk Fahmi Fadzil.

Fahmi, who is also Communications Minister, said such proposals could be brought forth by opposition lawmakers during the Minister’s Question Time (MQT) in the Dewan Rakyat next week.

He said there was no need at this stage to debate the matter in Parliament, as urged by the opposition, because the government has yet to receive the findings of the study conducted by the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM).

“There is nothing to be presented at this time because what (the Federal Territories Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department) Hannah Yeoh, mentioned is a study conducted by IIUM, and the findings have not yet been submitted to the Cabinet.

“So there is nothing yet. It is premature,” he said after witnessing the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Zchwantech Group and Magna AI here today.

Fahmi said this in response to Perikatan Nasional (PN) chief whip Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan yesterday, who urged the government to table and debate the proposal in Parliament.

On Feb 3, Hannah said a feasibility study on implementing local council elections in the capital, including the mayoral election, had been conducted since the tenure of the previous Federal Territories minister.

According to her, IIUM has been carrying out the study since last December, following the tabling of a private member’s bill by a Member of Parliament in the Dewan Rakyat.
