KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 7 (Bernama) -- As Ramadan approaches, residents of Taman Merbau Jaya in Sungai Dua, Penang, can look forward to performing their religious obligations in greater comfort with the opening of a new surau. Costing RM1.5 million, its construction was fully funded by Yayasan Rizalman Ibrahim (Yayasan RI).
Yayasan RI founder, renowned fashion designer Datuk Rizalman Ibrahim, said Surau Ar-Rijal was constructed on a 0.065-hectare plot of land owned by the Penang State Islamic Religious Council and can accommodate up to 350 worshippers at any one time.
He said the surau was built to meet the needs of the local community, who previously had to travel a considerable distance to the nearest mosque.
Rizalman added that the project, which began on Nov 15, 2024, and was completed at the end of December 2025, holds deep significance for him as he had never imagined being involved in the development of a place of worship for the local community.

“Allah made everything easy and for that I am truly grateful,” he told Bernama.
Rizalman said the entire construction cost was raised through donations from the foundation’s benefactors, as well as his own personal waqf contribution.
He said the successful completion of Surau Ar-Rijal demonstrates how commitment, sincerity and public trust can help realise charitable projects that deliver long-term benefits to the community.

He also expressed his appreciation to all donors, volunteers and the local residents involved in the project for their dedication and support in ensuring the surau was completed as planned.
Yayasan RI, established in 2020, provides assistance to vulnerable communities such as the needy, single mothers, senior citizens and the ill, in addition to helping underprivileged individuals perform the umrah pilgrimage.
