KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 8 (Bernama) -- Young National swimmer Tong Yu Jing has set his sights on improving his own national record of 22.48 seconds (s) in the men’s 50 metre (m) freestyle, set at last year’s Thailand SEA Games.

Without setting a specific target time, the SEA Games bronze medallist is determined to further refine his technique to ensure faster finishes in upcoming competitions.

“I’m trying to improve my timing. Hopefully I can shave off at least 0.1s that would be great,” he said when met at the Malaysia Invitational Age Group (MIAG) championships today.

Previously, Yu Jing finished third in the men’s 50m freestyle at the MIAG after clocking 23.56s.

The gold medal was won by Indonesia’s Jason Donovan Yusuf, while Hong Kong’s To Siu settled for silver with a time of 23.37s.

Describing his performance today, Yu Jing admitted he was not entirely satisfied with his swim, but regarded it as a positive start to the new season.

“It’s not the result I was hoping for, but considering it’s only my third week back in training after the SEA Games, I can’t really ask for more,” he said.
