Dredging Expedited To Secure Fishermen Navigation At Permatang Tepi Laut

GEORGE TOWN, April 7 (Bernama) -- Silicon Island Development Sdn Bhd (SIDSB) has begun dredging works at Permatang Tepi Laut, near here, ahead of schedule as part of its commitment to tackle navigation issues faced by local fishermen.

Its Strategic Communications and Stakeholder Management director Azmi Mohamad said the proactive measure forms part of the Penang State Government’s commitment to resolve long-standing siltation problems affecting the local fishing community.

“Dredging of the navigation channel, which has been ongoing for the past month, was initiated earlier than the original timeline – planned initially to begin only after the completion of the Silicon Island reclamation.

“The effort is further reinforced by ongoing temporary trenching works in Permatang Tengah to ensure smoother and safer passage for fishermen’s boats,” he said in a statement today.

He said the decision to expedite dredging works reflects the state government’s commitment to safeguarding the interests of the local community.

“While the siltation issue is a long-standing challenge, we remain committed to providing a more efficient and safer navigation route for fishermen.

“However, due to the large size of the cutter suction dredger in use, operations must be carried out according to tidal schedules to ensure safety and smooth execution,” he said.

Azmi added that the contractor is also working closely with the Permatang Damar Laut Community Association to carry out daily manual beach-cleaning works.

“At the same time, the Fishermen's One-Stop Service Centre (PPSN) conducts site monitoring twice daily, during both high and low tides, to ensure conditions remain under control,” he said.

He said the welfare of fishermen remains a central focus through the Social Impact Management Plan (SIMP). To date, 148 fishermen have received new boats and engines at an estimated cost of RM13.32 million, while ex-gratia payments totalling RM11.8 million have been disbursed to 795 fishermen.

The 930.78 hectares Silicon Island reclamation project, owned by the Penang State Government, aims to ensure long-term economic growth for the state.
