No Plans For State Polls In Perak - Saarani

08/04/2026 06:49 PM

IPOH, April 8 (Bernama) -- The Perak government has stressed that there are no plans to hold a state election in the near future, contrary to a claim in a local newspaper article.

Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad said the claim is baseless as the matter has never been discussed on any official state government platform.

He said this when commenting on a recent report by an English-language daily which claimed that Perak would hold a state election as a ‘test case’ ahead of the 16th General Election (GE16).

“I was personally surprised to read the article because this matter has never been discussed. Moreover, to hold a state election, the Menteri Besar must seek an audience with the Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Shah, to propose the dissolution of the State Legislative Assembly.

“If the proposal is not consented to, it could be considered as the Menteri Besar’s resignation. Therefore, this is unlikely to happen as I will not seek an audience with Tuanku for that purpose,” he said.

He said this at a press conference during the handover ceremony of the Dana Kreatif Perak@PORT (DKP) for the 2025/2026 edition at the Perak Darul Ridzuan Building, which was also attended by PORT board chairman Datuk Khairudin Abu Hanipah and general manager Nur Hanim Mohamed Khairuddin.

Saarani said the state government still has more than a year remaining to fulfil its administrative mandate for the five-year term.

“I see no possibility of a state election being held in the near future,” he said.
