PUTRAJAYA, April 8 (Bernama) -- The government is looking into the need to deploy security personnel, including the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) at petrol stations at the country's borders to enhance security control, said MADANI Government spokesperson Datuk Fahmi Fadzil.
Fahmi, who is also the Minister of Communications, said the initiative was being examined after the Cabinet was informed by the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) about several arrests at petrol stations at the country's borders.
"Several aspects involving security need to be improved and the Cabinet is considering the need for the presence of security personnel, especially PDRM personnel," he said at a global energy crisis briefing and post-Cabinet meeting press conference here today.
Earlier, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said the lead agencies for three sectors had been identified to stem the leakage, namely the land sector would be led by KPDN, the border sector by PDRM, while the maritime sector by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA).
Meanwhile, Fahmi said the mechanism to utilise the MyKasih system and the use of MyKad for the purpose of providing subsidies, including for diesel for Malaysians, will be studied by the Ministry of Finance (MOF).
"This mechanism will be studied by MOF and will be decided by the Cabinet before being finally announced," he said.
Regarding the issues faced by fishermen regarding diesel, Fahmi said the Cabinet has asked the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security and KPDN to study several follow-up actions, including the difference between the price of subsidised diesel and the revenue returns enjoyed and received by fishermen.
"This has resulted in fishing activities, especially in coastal and deep sea areas, being affected," he said.
