ESSCOM Bolsters Security To Combat Smuggling Of Subsidised Goods

LAHAD DATU, April 9 (Bernama) -- The Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSCOM) continues to strengthen security controls to tackle smuggling activities, including the trafficking of subsidised goods, along Sabah’s east coast through smart enforcement.

ESSCOM Commander Datuk Victor Sanjos said the move was not only driven by current security developments but also due to ongoing international conflicts.

“Global geopolitical tensions have put pressure on energy and fuel supply chains, subsequently driving an increase in smuggling activities. This poses a major challenge for enforcement agencies to tighten border controls.

“Integrated operations such as Ops Tiris are being empowered through cooperation with the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF), and the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA),” he said in his message at ESSCOM’s 13th anniversary gathering here today.

Victor said efforts to curb leakages by protecting public subsidies also supported the country’s economic growth.

He added that ESSCOM is also focusing on enforcement that has a direct impact on the local socio-economy, such as operations against illegal tourist resorts in Semporna.

“In those operations, 28 illegal immigrants were detained, while compounds were issued and seizures valued at RM680,000 were made. A total of 86 resorts were found to be operating illegally, with various violations detected, including the employment of undocumented workers,” he said.

Meanwhile, Victor said ESSCOM cannot afford to be complacent despite no kidnapping-for-ransom (KFR) cases being reported over the last five years.

“The security landscape is now more complex and requires continuous readiness, a proactive approach, and uncompromising enforcement,” he added.
