KUALA LUMPUR, April 10 (Bernama) -- Data has emerged as a critical driver of economic growth and national competitiveness, with Malaysia’s ability to manage and leverage it effectively expected to determine its position in the global digital economy.
Deputy Digital Minister Datuk Wilson Ugak Kumbong said data plays a central role in driving innovation and economic expansion in today’s digital landscape, and how it is utilised will shape the country’s future competitiveness.
“In today’s digital world, data plays an important role in driving economic growth and innovation. How well we manage and use data will shape how competitive we are as a nation,” he said at the Silverstreams data centre engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning (EPCC) contract signing here today.
Wilson said data has become a strategic national asset, making effective management and utilisation crucial in determining economic strength and competitiveness.
He said the development of modern data centres is no longer an option but a fundamental necessity to support the growth of the digital economy and technological innovation.
He noted that the development of such infrastructure would determine a country’s competitiveness in the global digital economy, while also attracting high-quality investments and accelerating technological innovation.
At the same time, he emphasised that data centre development goes beyond infrastructure and plays a key role in enabling the future digital economy.
“Data centre development is not just about infrastructure, but about enabling the future digital economy. Strong data infrastructure is essential to support artificial intelligence, advanced analytics and digital innovation,” he said.
Wilson said strengthening local data centre capabilities is crucial for enhancing national data sovereignty and reducing reliance on foreign infrastructure.
“This will also reduce reliance on foreign infrastructure while strengthening Malaysia’s ability to manage its own digital systems,” he said.
He added that the project reflects Malaysia’s commitment to building a strong and sustainable digital ecosystem that supports long-term economic growth.
