BERLIN, April 14 (Bernama-dpa) -- Ghana have appointed Carlos Queiroz as national team coach which will take the Portuguese veteran to a fifth World Cup, reported German Press Agency (dpa).

The Ghana FA said late Monday that Queiroz, 73, succeeds Otto Addo, who was dimissed on March 31 after losing World Cup tune-up matches in Austria and Germany.

"This is not just another job, it's a mission," he said.

Four-time African champions Ghana play England, Croatia and Panama in the group stage of the June 11-July 19 World Cup in the United States (US), Mexico and Canada.

The Black Stars reached the round of 16 in 2006 and the quarter-finals in 2010.

Mozambique-born Queiroz was Portugal coach at the 2010 World Cup and in charge of Iran at the 2014, 2018 and 2022 tournaments.

He has also coached national teams including Colombia and Egypt, managed clubs such as Real Madrid, and is a former long-time assistant coach at Manchester United.
