KUALA LUMPUR, April 15 (Bernama) -- Malaysia and Singapore are continuing to pursue stronger bilateral and regional cooperation in the energy sector, particularly renewable energy, to boost regional resilience and sustainability.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, who is also Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA) Minister, said he exchanged views on this matter with Tan See Leng, Singapore’s Minister for Manpower as well as Minister-in-charge of Energy, at Menara PETRA in Putrajaya today.
“In the discussion, he (Tan) also touched on the impact of the crisis in West Asia on global supply chains and the challenges faced by ASEAN,” he said in a post on Facebook.
According to him, Tan also recognised Malaysia’s efforts in strengthening energy security through the ASEAN Power Grid (APG) and stressed the importance of commitment among ASEAN member states to accomplish the agenda for a more secure energy future in Southeast Asia.
Meanwhile, Economy Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir said Malaysia and Singapore will continue to expedite the implementation of the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ), including exploring cooperation in green technologies through carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS).
He said the matter was discussed during a meeting with Tan at the Economy Ministry today.
“We definitely discussed continuing to expedite JS-SEZ cooperation, a key cross-regional initiative of the Economy Ministry that is a ‘game changer’ in enhancing economic complexity in both countries,” he said in his Facebook post today.
Akmal Nasrullah said Singapore remains Malaysia’s most important ASEAN trading partner, with total trade for January-October 2025 rising to RM339.39 billion.
“This is a significant figure reflecting the economic potential generated,” he said.
During the meeting, the two parties discussed in depth the potential for cooperation in green technologies through CCUS, as well as the readiness of Malaysia and Singapore in addressing global energy challenges following tensions in West Asia.
“I believe that through sincere and strategic cooperation, both countries will continue to benefit in a win-win situation.
“Most importantly for me is how these multi-billion ringgit investments can be translated into better economic and career opportunities for our youth, in Johor Bahru specifically as well as in Malaysia as a whole,” he added.
