KUALA LUMPUR, May 8 (Bernama) -- Datuk Ahmad Azam Ab Rahman has been appointed as the new Chairman of the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Council Zakat Collection Centre (PPZ-MAIWP), effective April 21 to Dec 31, 2028.
PPZ-MAIWP said Ahmad Azam fills the vacancy previously held by Datuk Seri Amrin Awaluddin, whose service ended on Feb 14.
“His appointment is a strategic step in ensuring the continuity of PPZ-MAIWP’s leadership, particularly in strengthening zakat and waqf collection functions in a more structured and innovative manner for the well-being of the Muslim community,” the centre said in a statement today.
It added that Ahmad Azam, 66, is a well-known figure in humanitarian activities, international diplomacy, and community development and holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from Indiana State University and a Master of Business Administration from Stephen F Austin State University, the United States.
Ahmad Azam has previously served in various roles in several organisations, including Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA), the Institute of Policy Studies, and as a lecturer at the Institute for Islamic Studies.
His key career highlights and contributions include serving as President of Wadah Pencerdasan Umat Malaysia (WADAH) and being a former President of the Muslim Youth Movement of Malaysia (ABIM), as well as the Founder of Global Peace Mission (GPM) Malaysia, where he led missions in more than 30 conflict and disaster-hit countries.
“In addition, he also served as a Commissioner of the OIC Independent Permanent Human Rights Commission (2019–2025) and is currently a Commissioner of the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (SUHAKAM),” it added.
