5,455 Online Content Complaints Recorded In Sabah - MCMC

PAITAN, May 16 (Bernama) -- A total of 5,455 online content complaints have been recorded in Sabah between 2023 and May 2026, with online fraud cases making up the highest number at 1,500.

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) said in a statement that cyberbullying and child pornography cases in the state are worrying.

“In Sandakan district alone, 998 complaints have been received, of which 384 involved online fraud, underscoring the need to further strengthen internet safety awareness,” it said.

The statement was issued in conjunction with the 2026 Safe Internet Campaign Community Carnival held here today, aimed at raising awareness among rural communities on digital safety and cyber risks.

The programme was held at Dewan Datuk James Ratib in Pekan Botition here and attended by more than 1,000 people.

It said 19 more carnival series to be held across the state through an outreach approach.

Throughout the carnival, various interactive activities were conducted, including agency exhibitions, internet safety sharing sessions, family-oriented activities, and community advocacy initiatives.

Registration for the Wira Internet Selamat (WIS) was also opened as a community volunteer initiative to help promote safe and responsible internet use in Sabah.
