KUANTAN, May 20 (Bernama) -- The inaugural Pahang People’s Football League 1st 2026, expected to attract 112 teams from across the state, was launched tonight as part of the state government’s effort to strengthen grassroots football development and unearth young talent.

Pahang Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail said the championship for the Al-Sultan Abdullah Cup would also serve as a platform for youths to showcase their talent and potential in football while encouraging their involvement in healthy community activities.

He said the initiative reflected the state government’s commitment to expanding football development at the grassroots level and creating greater opportunities for young players throughout Pahang.

“I am confident that programmes such as this will attract the interest of youths and at the same time encourage them to participate in healthy and beneficial activities, apart from helping to unearth their talent.

“In addition, I see this initiative as a way to strengthen unity among the people and foster the spirit of sportsmanship and cooperation within the community,” he told reporters after launching the championship at Stadium Darul Makmur here tonight.

Wan Rosdy said tournaments involving other sports such as pickleball could also be organised in future, subject to the state government’s financial position.

The championship, being held for the first time, is expected to become among the biggest grassroots football tournaments ever organised in Pahang with participation from teams throughout the state.

The first-stage matches are scheduled to take place from June 20 to July 26 using a group format before proceeding to the round of 16 in early August.

The quarter-finals will be held on Aug 15, followed by the semi-finals on Aug 22, while the final and third-fourth placing matches are scheduled for Aug 29 at Stadium Darul Makmur.
