KUALA LUMPUR, June 6 (Bernama) -- National women’s runner Shereen Samson Vallabuoy won the gold in the women’s 400 metre (m) event at the New Taipei City Open today.

She recorded a time of 52.73 seconds (s) to beat Jithma Wijhetunga (53.16s) and Sophia Gregorevic (53.86s), while in the men’s 400 m, Umar Osman could only secure the silver medal with a time of 46.42 s, 0.2 s behind Australian Brenton Kerr.

Methawi Kanhaaudom of Thailand was third with a time of 46.43 s.

Umar also managed to smash his own national record in the 400 m during the heats, setting a new record of 45.73 s to erase the old record of 46.09 s set at the World University Games in Chengdu, China in 2023.

“I’ve waited for this national record of 45.73 s for three years. All the ups and downs, my sweat during training and the spirit to rise up finally has borne fruit,” he said in a video shared by Athletics Malaysia on Facebook today.
