Local Music Needs Greater Broadcast Support, Says Fahmi

KUALA LUMPUR, June 9 (Bernama) -- Local songs should be given greater airtime on radio stations than foreign music, Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said today.

In a Facebook post, he said the matter should be given more serious attention to help promote local music, including on stations broadcasting in Tamil, Chinese and English.

“The local music industry can only continue to grow if its ecosystem moves in tandem through the creation of new works, broadcasting, promotion and sustained support for local artistes,” he said.

Fahmi said the issue was discussed during his meeting with representatives of the Malaysian Indian Recording Artist Association (MINDRAA) at Angkasapuri here, where they exchanged views on strengthening support and opportunities for local music on radio stations.

He said Malaysia is home to many talented artistes who continue to produce quality music.

Fahmi added that various forms of support have been provided to the creative industry, including grants for arts practitioners and platforms such as the R!UH event, which showcases Malaysian talent.
