SIBU, June 13 (Bernama) -- Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing has called on the Malaysian Army to expand community engagement programmes to strengthen public understanding of the military's role and foster patriotism.
He said initiatives such as the Jelajah Wira MADANI programme should be expanded as they help the public better appreciate the sacrifices and contributions of military personnel in safeguarding the nation's sovereignty.
“The peace and stability we enjoy today are the result of the sacrifices and unwavering commitment of our security personnel, who are always prepared to defend the nation.
“I hope more programmes of this nature will be organised in the future, including those involving male and female military veterans,” he said at the Gawai Day celebration held in conjunction with the Jelajah Wira MADANI 2026 programme at Dewan RASCOM, RASCOM Camp 9th Brigade, here today.
At the event, Tiong also presented an allocation of RM50,000 to the 9th Brigade.
The Jelajah Wira MADANI programme is an initiative by the government and the Ministry of Defence to engage with and recognise the contributions of frontline personnel, particularly members of the Malaysian Army.
Tiong, who is also Bintulu MP and assemblyman for Dudong, said Gawai Day holds special significance for the Dayak community in Sarawak as it symbolises gratitude for the harvest and blessings received, as well as unity among the state's diverse communities.
He said unity remains a valuable asset that underpins stability, economic progress and national development.
“Sarawak's cultural and ethnic diversity should continue to be a strength in building a better future,” he said.
Tiong also expressed appreciation to members of the 9th Brigade, their families and military veterans for their service and sacrifices in preserving the country's peace and sovereignty.
Also present was Army Eastern Field Commander Lt Gen Datuk Mohd Sofi Md Lepi.
