KUALA LUMPUR, June 21 (Bernama) -- The National Sports Council (NSC) men’s 4x100-metre (m) team clinched the gold medal at the Malaysia Open Athletics Championships today with a performance that puts the national record within close reach.
The quartet, comprising Muhammad Azeem Mohd Fahmi, Danish Iftikhar Muhammad Roslee, Pengiran Aidil Auf Hajam, and Mohamad Armin Zahryl, clocked 39.16 seconds (s) at the Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) Stadium in Serdang.
Muhammad Azeem, who ran the opening leg, said the result was a highly encouraging start for the squad, especially as it was their first competitive race together.
"I am very positive that one day, if we are partnered again to run in any upcoming championships, Insya-Allah (God willing), that national record will not last long," he told reporters after the race here.
He added that the team shared excellent chemistry despite being a new lineup, as they have known each other since their school days.
"We are all around the same age, Armin and Pengiran (Aidil) are 21, I am 22, and Danish (19) is slightly younger. So there was absolutely no problem for us to work together because we have always raced against each other since we were young," Muhammad Azeem added.
The team will look to carry this fine form into the upcoming Asian Under-23 (U-23) Championships and the Asian Games.
Meanwhile, Pengiran Aidil Auf expressed his delight at being included in the lineup, describing the current quartet as possessing extraordinary speed.
He was also part of the squad that set the standing national record of 39.03s at the 2025 Thailand SEA Games and firmly believes this new combination can improve on that mark.
As for Mohamad Armin, he thanked the NSC for the opportunity to compete alongside senior runners in the relay.
Danish Iftikhar, who missed out on a podium finish in the individual 100m earlier, said the relay victory serves as great motivation for him to bounce back at future meets.
Malaysia University A took the silver medal, while Johor finished third to claim the bronze.
