KUALA LUMPUR, June 29 (Bernama) -- Malaysia stormed into the last eight of the Badminton Asia Junior Championships (BAJC) 2024 after thrashing Kazakhstan 5-0 in their second Group B match at Yogyakarta, Indonesia, today.

Malaysia, who blew Macau away with an identical scoreline in the opening game yesterday, drew the first blood when girls’ singles player Ong Xin Yee demolished Alissa Kuleshova 21-3, 21-3.

Boys’ singles player Roslie Razeeq Danial put Malaysia in a commanding 2-0 lead as he hammered Otabek Kamilov 21-9, 21-6 while girls’doubles pair Nicole Chau-Carmen Ting delivered the third and winning point for Malaysia with a 21-3, 21-5 victory over Alissa Kuleshova-Diana Namenova.

The rout continued in the fourth game, where boys’ doubles pair Goh Yi Qin-Lok Hong Qan, did not break a sweat as they crushed Aituar Romazanov-Arnur Tapishev, 21-8, 21-7 before the mixed doubles capped the national team’s excellent performance as they handed out a 21-2, 21-7 drubbing to Otabek Kamilov-Diana Namenova in just 14 minutes.

Today’s win assures Malaysia, who are top of Group B with their last match against the United Arab Emirates tomorrow, a spot in quarterfinals as the top two teams of each group advance to the quarterfinals under the championship’s rules.

Last year, Malaysia failed to clear the quarter-finals when they were sent packing by Thailand, 0-3, also in Yogyakarta.

The last time Malaysia secured a medal in mixed team event was in 2018 when they took home the bronze in Jakarta.
