NILAI, July 2 (Bernama) -- Enforcement, Leadership and Management (ELMU) University in Bandar Enstek here is expected to receive about 800 students for the first admission starting on July 20.

ELMU vice-chancellor Datuk Dr Kassim Noor Mohamed said it was through 11 programmes offered by the university including Foundation, Diploma, Bachelor's Degree, Master's and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD).

Providing a paradigm shift in integrated law enforcement tertiary education, the bespoke study programmes offered include Foundation in Law Enforcement, Diploma in International Law Enforcement, Bachelor’s in Disaster and Emergency Management (Honours) and Master’s in Criminology and Criminal Justice.

“So far we have had an enrolment of 569 students for all levels of study. This is the first full-fledged university related to enforcement, leadership and management in Malaysia, among other things aiming to help the country in terms of law enforcement, which we do through niche education.

“We also want to be a benchmark for others … at present there are various perceptions the public has about law enforcement in this country, so how we help in this (is to shape future leaders), that's why we made the decision to establish this university,” he said.

He said this after signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Confederation of Scientific and Technological Associations in Malaysia (COSTAM) and a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with ELS Language Centres (ELS) here today.

Also present were COSTAM president Prof Dr Ruslan Hassan and ELS managing director Sean Chee.

Kassim said ELMU University also established engagement and cooperation (theory and practice) with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) in aspects of enforcement and prevention of corruption, besides allowing MACC officers and trainees of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Academy (MACA) to continue their studies at ELMU.

He said ELMU will also cooperate with other enforcement agencies including the Customs Department, the Immigration Department and domestic and foreign universities.

“Regarding job opportunities, they are open, but students will have added value if they want to work in the field of enforcement after completing their studies. Our teaching staff is also trained in certain fields including engineering, forensics and so on,” he said.

In the meantime, he said today’s MoU is to increase educational opportunities for local and international students while strengthening scientific and technological progress for the growth of knowledge and skills required in academia and industry.

ELMU University, which so far has a capacity of up to 3,000 students, received approval for the establishment of a university from the Ministry of Higher Education with effect from Feb 8 in 2022 and it is expected to be officiated in November.
