PUTRAJAYA, July 2 (Bernama) -- The Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Al-Sharif Prof Dr Ahmad Muhammad Ahmad At-Tayyeb will undertake a three-day special visit to Malaysia from July 2 to 5, at the invitation of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

The Foreign Ministry, in a statement on Tuesday, said during the visit, the Grand Imam will meet with the prime minister at Seri Perdana, where both are expected to take stock and discuss the enhancement of cooperation between Malaysia and Egypt, specifically in Islamic affairs and education.

The ministry said the Grand Imam will also deliver a talk at the “Majlis Ilmu MADANI: Distinguished Speaker Series” at Seri Perdana.

It said as a gesture of appreciation for his contributions to Islamic thought and development, the Grand Imam will be conferred an honorary doctorate by Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia at a special ceremony in Kuala Lumpur.

“The visit of the Grand Imam, whose rank is equivalent to that of a prime minister under the Egyptian Constitution, marks another milestone in the relations between Malaysia and the Arab Republic of Egypt,” the statement said.

It noted that it also serves as a testament to the strong linkages and dynamic collaboration between the two countries in building a progressive and dynamic Muslim Ummah.
