KUALA TERENGGANU, July 3 (Bernama) -- Terengganu’s gross domestic product (GDP) grew to RM38.2 billion last year, a 2.3 per cent increase from the RM37.4 billion recorded in 2022, according to Department of Statistics Malaysia chief statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin.

He said the services sector dominated in 2023, contributing 52 per cent to the state’s economy.

“The manufacturing sector was the second biggest contributor to GDP at 36.9 per cent, followed by the agriculture sector at 7.5 per cent. The construction sector and mining and quarrying sector contributed three and 0.5 per cent, respectively,” he said in a statement.

The state’s GDP per capita stood at RM31,111 in 2023.

On sectoral economic performance, Mohd Uzir said the services sector grew 3.1 per cent in 2023, with an added value growth to RM19.9 billion.

He said the sector’s growth was mainly driven by growth in the utilities, transport and storage, and information and communication technology subsectors which grew 2.4 per cent from the preceding year.

He said the services sector growth was driven by a 3.8 per cent growth in the government services subsector, while the manufacturing sector expanded a marginal 0.2 per cent year-on-year with an added value of RM14.1 billion in 2023.

“The marginal growth was driven mainly by the petroleum, chemical, rubber and plastic products which grew 0.3 per cent, especially chemical products,” he added.
