NO HOTSPOT IN SUNGAI BAKAP - POLICE

05/07/2024 10:29 PM

NIBONG TEBAL, July 5 (Bernama) -- No areas in the Sungai Bakap constituency have been categorised as hotspots, said Penang police chief Datuk Hamzah Ahmad.

However, he said three polling centres for the state by-election are expected to experience congestion tomorrow due to a large number of voters, namely Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Bandar Tasek Mutiara, Sekolah Kebangsaan Sungai Duri and Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan (Cina) Boon Seng.

Therefore, Hamzah said the police have assigned their officers and personnel to ensure a smooth voting process and traffic control for the polling day tomorrow.

“There are no hotspots in the Sungai Bakap state by-election due to the smooth election campaign. In terms of security, the police have carried out detailed measures,” he said when appearing as a guest on Bernama TV’s Sembang Santai PRK DUN Sungai Bakap programme here today.

Hamzah added that as at 7 pm today, a total of 199 permits for mobile campaigns, talks, and visits have been issued to both contesting parties, with no permits being rejected thus far.

The official campaign period will end at 11.59 pm today.

The by-election tomorrow is a straight fight between Pakatan Harapan candidate Dr Joohari Ariffin and Nibong Tebal PAS vice-chief Abidin Ismail.

The seat fell vacant following the death of incumbent Nor Zamri Latiff of PAS on May 24 due to stomach inflammation.
