JAKARTA, July 17 (Bernama) -- At least seven people have perished following a landslide in Mimika in Central Papua province on Sunday, caused by three consecutive days of heavy rain, according to the spokesperson of Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), Abdul Muhari.

“All victims have been successfully evacuated and buried by their families," he said in a statement Wednesday regarding the landslide incident that occurred in Uini, Kali Kabur, Tembagapura district.

Abdul Muhari said that the Mimika disaster management agency reported 17 landslide locations in the Tembagapura area.

The BNPB has urged local authorities and residents in the region to remain vigilant for potential subsequent landslides as the area still faces the possibility of heavy rain accompanied by lightning and strong winds.

According to Abdul Muhari, the forecast indicates cloudy weather with light rain in Mimika area.
