ARGENTINA DEMAND ACTION FROM FIFA AFTER TURBULENT START AT OLYMPICS

25/07/2024 10:28 PM

PARIS, July 25 (Bernama-dpa) --The Argentinian football federation has lodged a complaint with football ruling body FIFA after a turbulent start at the 2024 Olympics in Paris on Wednesday, German news agency (dpa) reported.

The federation called on FIFA to take action over the "serious incident".

"What happened on the pitch was a scandal," Argentina coach Javier Mascherano said.

Morocco led the Group B clash 2-1, but Argentina scored the equaliser in the 16th minute of stoppage time. That sparked objects being thrown, while fans also stormed onto the pitch and players were taken off for their safety.

Fans were then asked to leave the stadium with a message being projected on screens that read: "Your session has been suspended, please leave the stadium."

For a long time, it was unclear whether the game had been suspended or just interrupted. In addition, Argentina's equaliser was checked by VAR for a possible offside position.

The game resumed behind closed doors after almost two hours and referee Glenn Nyberg ruled out Argentina's late goal. The match was played for three more minutes, after which Morocco's 2-1 win was confirmed.

The Olympic organisers said that they were reviewing the incident to understand the causes and draw the necessary conclusions.
