PARIS, July 28 (Bernama-Xinhua) -- Australia set a new Olympic record as it claimed its fourth consecutive gold medal in the women's 4x100m freestyle relay at the Paris 2024 Games on Saturday.
The Australian team of Mollie O'Callaghan, Shayna Jack, Emma McKeon and Meg Harris finished in three minutes and 28.92 seconds, beating its own previous Olympic record of 3:29.69 set in Tokyo three years ago, Xinhua news agency reported.
The United States were second at the Paris La Defense Arena in 3:30.20 and China third in 3:30.30.
"For me it's definitely about getting up there and doing my country proud," said Jack, who missed out on the Tokyo Olympics.
"It's a really special moment to stand on the podium with the other three girls, and represent the other two girls from our heat swim, I'm really proud of myself and how far I've come, but I definitely missed that opportunity in 2021."
The 25-year-old from Brisbane paid tribute to her family and friends, many of whom were watching from the bleachers, it reported.
"There are so many people I would dedicate this to: to my parents who are in the stands and my partner Joel. He's here tonight too, which is really special. There's no word for the amount of support they've given me up to this point and I'm immensely grateful."
Australia has won gold in the event at four of the past five Olympic Games.
