KUALA LUMPUR, July 28 (Bernama) -- Malaysia expressed its anticipation to continue strengthening dialogue and cooperation with the United Kingdom’s under its new leadership.

The Malaysian Foreign Ministry, in a post on Facebook on Sunday, said the intention was expressed during the ASEAN Post Ministerial Conference with the UK on Friday in Vientiane, Laos.

The ministry’s Secretary-General Datuk Seri Amran Mohamed Zin led Malaysia’s delegation to the meeting.

“Malaysia also urged the UK, as a United Nations Security Council permanent member, to support self-determination for the Palestinian people; call for a ceasefire in Gaza, and back ASEAN’s efforts towards peace in Myanmar,” said the post.

According to the post, economic priorities highlighted by Malaysia included cross-border financial technology, supporting MSMEs (micro, small and medium enterprises), and fostering digital literacy through the ASEAN-UK Financial Services Collaboration Package.

In addition, Malaysia emphasised expanding educational exchanges to nurture innovation and critical-thinking among youth, the post added.

Malaysia further called for ASEAN and the UK to prioritise a just, inclusive and equitable green transition through cooperation in renewable energy, green infrastructure and climate financing.

The British Labour Party, led by Keir Starmer, won the UK general election early this month.
