SINGAPORE, Aug 1 (Bernama) -- Singapore has called on all parties in the Middle East to take de-escalatory steps to avoid exacerbating tensions and a wider regional conflagration.

The spokesperson of the Foreign Ministry (MFA) said Singapore is deeply concerned about recent developments in the Middle East, including the killing of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh who was involved in the negotiations for a ceasefire in Gaza.

“This puts at risk efforts to secure a ceasefire agreement that would allow for the release of all hostages and facilitate humanitarian assistance to the civilian population,” it said in a statement, on Thursday.

According to reports, Haniyeh, who was in Tehran to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Iran’s new president, was killed in an airstrike that targeted his residence on Wednesday.
