PARIS, Aug 9 (Bernama-dpa) -- German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has praised hosts France for the way they are staging the Paris Olympics, labelling them an encouragement for his country and its plan to host the Games again in the future, German Press Agency (dpa) reported.

Scholz is visiting the Paris Games which run until Sunday after the German government endorsed a future bid, preferably for 2040 which would be 50 years after German reunification.

"It's a spirit of Olympic excellence, fairness and cooperation. That is very important when you live in this world," Scholz said on Friday during a visit to the German Olympic club in Paris.

"That's why I'm delighted with what we've been able to experience here and hope that it's a little bit contagious.

"As you know, it is also our plan to once again focus on the Olympic Games in Germany. In this respect, it is a big inspiration that we are experiencing together here. It is really great what has been achieved here in Paris."

Germany hosted the Olympics 1936 in Berlin during the Nazi era and 1972 in Munich, plus the 1936 Winter Games in Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

Several later bids have failed, and attempts from Munich for the 2022 snow and ice Games and Hamburg for 2024 were stopped by referendums.
