RULING GIVING ROMANIAN GYMNAST BRONZE AWARDED TO US ATHLETE APPEALED

WASHINGTON, Aug. 12 (Bernama-dpa) -- USA Gymnastics on Sunday said that it submitted further evidence to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to back its case that their athlete Jordan Chiles should retain the bronze medal she was awarded in the women's floor exercise final at the Paris Olympics, reported German Press Agency (dpa).

Romania's Ana Barbosu had originally finished third in Monday's event.

But she dropped to fourth after the US team submitted an inquiry shortly after Chiles finished her routine, which resulted in her score being raised from 13.666 to 13.766, elevating the US gymnast from fifth to third place.

Romania brought the case to the CAS, which ruled that Chiles' original score should be reinstated on the basis that the US inquiry was submitted past the 1-minute deadline and should therefore be voided.

On Saturday, the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) said that it would respect the CAS' decision to award the bronze to Barbosu. Early on Sunday, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) said it accepted the FIG's "amendment of the ranking" and would "reallocate the bronze medal" to Barbosu.

Later on Sunday, USA Gymnastics said it had submitted "a letter and video evidence to the Court of Arbitration for Sport conclusively establishing that Head Coach Cecile Landi's request to file an inquiry was submitted 47 seconds after the publishing of the score."

The US body said it was calling for the CAS ruling to be revised and for Chiles' bronze medal score to be reinstated.

Gold medal in the women's floor exercise went to Brazil's Rebeca Andrade ahead of Simone Biles, who won the team, all-around and vault in Paris.

The photograph of Biles and Chiles bowing down to Andrade on the podium in a show of admiration is one of the images of Paris 2024.
