JAKARTA, Aug. 19 (Bernama) -- Indonesian President Joko Widodo has been awarded the highest honour by the Palestinian government for his efforts in strengthening relations between the two countries and his ongoing support for the Palestinian people's struggle for independence.

The ‘Grand Collar Order of the State of Palestine’ was presented by the special envoy of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, Riyad Al Maliki, to Joko Widodo, also known as Jokowi, during a ceremony at the Merdeka Palace here on Monday (August 18).

Indonesia's Foreign Minister, Retno Marsudi, stated that the award recognises Jokowi's continuous support for Palestinian independence and Indonesia's active role in promoting ceasefire agreements, humanitarian aid, and a two-state solution.

During the meeting, Jokowi reiterated Indonesia's commitment to securing international recognition and full membership for Palestine at the United Nations (UN).

"Indonesia will continue to engage with UN member states to recognise Palestine," Retno added in a press conference.
