KUCHING, Aug 20 (Bernama) -- The Federal Territories (FT) booked their place in the semi-finals of the 2024 Malaysia Games (SUKMA) men's football competition, defeating last year's finalists Penang 2-0 in the quarter-finals at the Mukah Stadium today.

Mohd Nidzam Adzha’s side had to wait until the second half break through their opponents' resolute defence, with substitute midfielder Aiyubbi Solahuddin Nizam repaying the faith shown in him by scoring the opener in the 58th minute.

Penang, under the guidance of Manzoor Azwira, fought back in search of an equaliser, but their hopes of a semi-final berth were dashed when Muhammad Shairulaikal sealed victory for FT in the dying moments of second-half added time.

This win sets up a semi-final showdown for FT against Kelantan at the Dalat/Mukah district council (MDDM) field on Thursday, with a place in the final on the line.

Meanwhile, Melaka also booked their spot in the semi-finals after coming from behind to edge out Perak 2-1 in another quarter-final clash at the MDDM field.

After a goalless first half, Perak, coached by Mohd Shahril Nizam Khalil, broke the deadlock through forward Mohamad Haziq Danish Mohd Hafidz in the 61st minute.

However, the lead was short-lived as Melaka equalised just four minutes later thanks to defender Muhammad Aqil Rozaidi’s strike, before Muhammad Haziq became Melaka’s hero with the winning goal in the 87th minute.

Awaiting Melaka in the semi-final, scheduled to take place at the Mukah Stadium on Thursday, are  defending champions Terengganu.
