BETONG, Aug 22 (Bernama) -- Federal Territories (FT) weightlifter Mohamad Syahmi Nor Ghazali was overcome with emotion today after he clinched the gold medal in the men’s 89kg category at the 2024 Malaysia Games (SUKMA), fulfilling a promise he made to his late grandmother.

The 20-year-old was moved to tears, reflecting on his grandmother, Rogayah Ahmad, who passed away from lung cancer in 2019.

“I promised my late grandmother that I would win at SUKMA, and today, I’ve kept that promise. This gold medal is for her,” he said.

“But I won’t stop here. I aim to push further and compete at higher levels. My goal is to make it to the SEA Games, the Commonwealth Games, and, if fate allows, the Olympics, just like Aniq,” he said, referring to national weightlifter Aniq Kasdan, who narrowly missed out on a podium finish in the men’s 61kg weightlifting event at the Paris Olympics recently.

Mohamad Syahmi clinched the gold with a total lift of 302kg, edging his closest competitor, Perak's Muhammad Irfan Haziq, who earned silver with a total of 295kg.

The bronze medal was claimed by Perlis’ Muhammad Aizul Hafizi Mansor with a total lift of 246kg.

In the women’s 64kg category, 2023 SEA Games bronze medallist Nur Syazwani Radzi from Kedah lived up to expectations by winning gold with a total lift of 180kg.

Qisvena Abdullah from Johor took home the silver medal with a total lift of 156kg, while Perak's Balqis Syakirah Badrol Hisham secured the bronze with a total lift of 145kg.

In the women’s 71kg category, Terengganu's Nur Alissa Sofea Mohamadnor Wardi took the gold with a total lift of 166kg, narrowly edging out Pahang’s Marsyahirazawati Mohd Rais, who lifted 165kg to claim silver.

The bronze went to Perlis' Dhiya Raihan Zulkarnain, with a total lift of 162kg.
