SIBU, Aug 24 (Bernama) -- National shuttler Justin Hoh of Federal Territories (FT) lived up to expectations as he clinched the men’s singles gold medal at the 2024 Malaysia Games (SUKMA) after defeating Penang’s Ong Zhen Yi 21-16, 21-15 in the final at the Sibu Indoor Stadium here today.

Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) players Justin, the world number 68, and Zhen Yi, the world number 131, are training mates at Akademi Badminton Malaysia (ABM).

Meanwhile, Selangor’s Chua Kim Sheng outplayed FT’s Hooi Shao Herng 21-11, 21-15 in the bronze medal playoff.

In the women’s singles final, Sarawak’s Wong Ling Ching gave the home fans plenty to cheer for when she downed Penang’s Oo Shan Zi 21-12, 21-15 for the gold medal.

Shan Zi, so impressive in her semi-final win over top seed K. Letshanaa of Selangor, failed to reproduce that form and had to be satisfied with the silver medal.

Letshanaa marked her final SUKMA outing with a bronze medal after her opponent, teammate Siti Nurshuhaini Azman retired with an injury in the second game.

Letshanaa won the first game 21-16 and was trailing 11-16 in the second when Siti Nurshuhaini was forced to retire.
