NEW DELHI, Sept 14 (Bernama) -- Eight men drowned while bathing in a river in the western Indian state of Gujarat on Friday.

The drowning incident was reported by villagers who had gone to the Meshwo river in Gujarat's Gandhinagar district for an idol immersion ritual, a senior police official told local media.

Police recovered eight bodies from the river and were trying to find out if anyone else was missing.

An eyewitness, who was part of the group, told the police that there were a total of nine people bathing in the river while a group of villagers had gathered to immerse the Hindu deity Ganesha's idols.
