ALOR SETAR, Sept 14 (Bernama) -- Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) emerged as the overall champions of the Higher Education Institution Games (SUKIPT) 2024 at Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM).

UiTM bagged 38 golds, 20 silvers and 39 bronzes to be crowned overall champions, followed by Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) and Politeknik Malaysia.

UiPM and UPM shared the same number of gold medals but the former were declared overall champions based on their total number of 97 medals, compared to UPM's 78.

"Congratulations to all the male and female students who gave their best in the sports arena … not forgetting the coaches who always encouraged our athletes," said UiTM deputy vice-chancellor (HEP) Prof Dr Mohd Sazili Shahibi.

Earlier, Ministry of Higher Education secretary-general Datuk Seri Dr Zaini Ujang closed SUKIPT 2024 at Dewan Muadzam Shah in UUM today.

A total of 6,148 athletes from 74 contingents, including public universities, private universities, polytechnics, community colleges and Teacher Education Institutes (IPG), competed for 231 gold medals in 28 sports events at the Games, which began on Sept 6.

SUKIPT 2024 created history because, for the first time since 2012, six national records were broken in kayak, involving six events comprising eight athletes, enabling them to take home RM20,000 in prize money.

A total of 24 Games records were also broken, 15 in archery (eight in compound and seven in recurve) and nine in athletics.
