WASHINGTON, Sept 16 (Bernama-dpa) -- A shooting near former United States  (US) President Donald Trump on Sunday is being investigated as "what appears to be an attempted assassination," the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) says, German News Agency (dpa) reported.

Trump's campaign team said the Republican presidential candidate was safe after shots were fired "in his vicinity" in Florida.

A spokesman for the US Secret Service also confirmed that Trump was safe after shots were fired at Trump's golf course.

“A suspect had been detained by local police, who had found an AK-47 assault rifle with a telescopic sight and camera in the bushes at the scene”, Palm Beach County sheriff Ric Bradshaw said in a press conference.

The incident comes after Trump was shot in an attempted assassination at a campaign rally in July.

Earlier, dpa reported that a spokesman for the US Secret Service has confirmed that US presidential candidate Donald Trump is in safety after reports of shots fired.

"The Secret Service, in conjunction with the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, is investigating a protective incident involving former President Donald Trump that occurred shortly before 2 pm," Spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said on X.

The Secret Service is responsible for protecting high-ranking politicians in the US, including current and former presidents.
