BAGHDAD, Sept 28 (Bernama-Sputnik) -- Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al Sudani has ordered a three-day national mourning in tribute to late Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah killed in the Israeli attack on Beirut, the prime minister's office said on Saturday, reported Sputnik.

Earlier in the day, the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) said Nasrallah had been eliminated in the Israeli airstrike on Beirut on Friday. Hezbollah later officially confirmed Nasrallah's death.

"Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al Sudani has directed that a three-day period of national mourning be declared across Iraq in honour of the martyrdom of Hezbollah Secretary-General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah and his comrades, following the heinous Zionist aggression," the office said in a statement.

Israel began a massive bombing campaign, codenamed Northern Arrows, in southern and eastern parts of Lebanon on Monday. The Lebanese Health Ministry put the death toll at over 1,500. Hezbollah retaliated by firing dozens of rockets towards northern Israel.

The escalation followed a series of pager and walkie-talkie explosions that rocked Lebanon from Sept 17 to 18, killing about 40 people and injuring nearly 3,500 others.
