NEW YORK, Oct 2 (Bernama-WAM) -- UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres denounced the escalation of tensions Tuesday in the Middle East, especially between Iran and Israel, Emirates News Agency (WAM) reported.

"This must stop. We absolutely need a ceasefire,'' he said in a statement on the latest developments in the Middle East.

"I condemn the broadening of the Middle East conflict with escalation after escalation," Guterres wrote on X.

Meanwhile in another news also from New York WAM reported  Guterres voiced extreme concern with the escalation of the conflict in Lebanon and appealed for an immediate ceasefire.

"An all-out war must be avoided in Lebanon at all costs, and the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Lebanon must be respected,'' said Guterres in a statement Tuesday.

The Secretary-General appealed to the international community to urgently support the $426 million humanitarian appeal launched today in Beirut.

"The Secretary-General will continue his contacts, and his representatives on the ground will also continue their efforts to de-escalate the situation,'' the statement added.
