JAKARTA, Oct 5 (Bernama) -- President Joko Widodo has called on the Indonesian National Army (TNI) to remain vigilant and prepared as the nation faces escalating global challenges, including rapid technological advancements, increasing cyber threats, and rising geopolitical tensions.
Speaking at the TNI’s 79th Anniversary Ceremony in Central Jakarta on Saturday, Widodo, also known as Jokowi, highlighted the evolving nature of modern conflicts, which now extend beyond traditional warfare to encompass economic and trade disputes.
“The challenges ahead are indeed not getting any easier. The TNI must continuously improve, adapt to ongoing changes, and enhance its capacity and professionalism.”
Jokowi stressed the importance of cooperation, urging the TNI to work closely with law enforcement agencies to ensure stability, engage with universities on scientific advancements, and partner with industry leaders to strengthen Indonesia’s domestic defence sector.
As he prepares to hand over power to Defence Minister General (Ret.) Prabowo Subianto on Oct 20, Jokowi thanked the latter for his efforts in modernising military equipment, promoting the country’s defence industry, and enhancing defence diplomacy.
Jokowi expressed gratitude for the commitment of TNI personnel, acknowledging their vital role in safeguarding the country’s sovereignty and maintaining political stability during his decade-long tenure.
He urged the TNI to ensure stability ahead of the upcoming presidential inauguration and regional elections in November, which will involve 508 districts and cities across 37 provinces.
The anniversary ceremony at the National Monument Square saw thousands of military personnel from the TNI’s three branches – land, sea and air.
They took part in a parade that showcased over a thousand pieces of military equipment, including tactical vehicles, armoured combat vehicles, troop transport trucks, fighter jets, and weapon launch systems.
