VIENTIANE, Oct 10 (Bernama) -- Thailand has been elected as a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council for the 2025-2027 term, a position the country is deeply honoured to undertake, said its Foreign Ministry.

"This election underscores Thailand's growing influence and responsibility in promoting human rights and cooperation on the global stage," the Thai Foreign Ministry said in a statement, on Thursday.

It expressed gratitude to fellow UN Member States, particularly ASEAN nations, for their support and confidence in Thailand's ability to contribute on the global stage.

"Thailand pledged to serve as a bridge-builder in the Council, fostering dialogue and consensus among countries with diverse views.

"The country plans to leverage its progressive stance on various human rights issues while remaining respectful of the social, religious, and cultural differences of developing nations," according to the statement.

The ministry said Thailand intends to share its internationally recognised best practices in fields such as Universal Health Coverage and Education for All with other member states.

It added that the country also commits to adopting international human rights standards tailored to its national context.

Thailand was one of the 18 new countries, elected by a secret ballot on Wednesday to serve in the 47-member Human Rights Council in the three-year terms beginning on Jan 1, 2025.

The other countries are Benin, Bolivia, Colombia, Cyprus, Czechia, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Gambia, Iceland, Kenya, Marshall Islands, Mexico, North Macedonia, Qatar, South Korea, Spain and Switzerland.
