10/10/2024 07:48 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 10 (Bernama) -- AirAsia Group Bhd has been recognised by the OAG Megahubs Index 2024 as a key contributor to Kuala Lumpur International Airport's (KLIA) ranking as the world's top Low-Cost Carrier (LCC) Megahub.

A "Megahub" refers to an airport with a high volume of international connections, enabling extensive global travel.

In a statement, AirAsia reaffirmed its commitment to expanding its operations and announced five new routes, bringing its total to 112 international and 14 domestic routes from KLIA.

These new routes include destinations across Asia and Africa, with up to 236 daily departures from KLIA in the fourth quarter of this year.

AirAsia Aviation Group advisor and Capital A chief executive officer Tan Sri Tony Fernandes said KLIA  is leading the region by offering more than 14,500 low-cost connections, surpassing Singapore and Bangkok in air connectivity.

“AirAsia’s ongoing network expansion will not only strengthen KLIA’s position among the world’s top airports but also ensure that we remain competitive in connecting both emerging and established markets," he said.

AirAsia Aviation Group Ltd group chief executive officer Bo Lingam emphasised that the company has reactivated its order book this year, taking delivery of four new A321neos, with five more expected soon.

"Our fleet reactivation is ongoing and set to be completed this year. We currently have an order for 361 units of the A321 model to support the airline's fleet growth and replacement needs.

"With this secured aircraft delivery stream, we can rapidly grow our network, enhance connectivity across Asia and beyond, and position Southeast Asia as a key transit hub, similar to Dubai, through our multi-hub connectivity," he added.
