PUTRAJAYA, Oct 11 (Bernama) — The Federal Court will hear on Nov 12 an application brought by former Perak executive councillor Paul Yong to admit new evidence in an attempt to overturn his conviction for raping his maid five years ago.
His lawyer Datuk Hisyam Teh Poh Teik, when contacted, confirmed that Yong filed the application early this week.
A case management session was held today before Federal Court deputy registrar Faezahnoor Hassan.
Hisyam also said the hearing of Yong’s appeal against his conviction and imprisonment, initially fixed on Oct 23, has been rescheduled to Nov 25.
On March 1, this year, the Court of Appeal, in a split decision, dismissed Yong’s appeal and upheld his conviction for the offence.
The appellate court three-judge panel, had, however, reduced Yong’s prison sentence from 13 years to eight years with two strokes of the cane.
The panel had allowed a stay of execution, pending disposal of the appeal at the Federal Court.
Yong was released on RM30,000 bail with one surety and also ordered to surrender his passport to the court.
On July 27, 2022, the High Court in Ipoh found Yong guilty of raping a 23-year-old Indonesian maid in a room at his house in Ipoh on July 7, 2019.
