MOSCOW, Oct. 23 (Bernama-Sputnik) -- New protests have broken out in the Bangladeshi capital of Dhaka, and at least five people have been injured in clashes with local police, reported Sputnik.

The protesters are demanding the resignation of Bangladeshi President Mohammad Shahabuddin due to his recent statements about the resignation of the country's former prime minister, Sheikh Hasina.

Five people, including two journalists, were slightly injured when police used a stun grenade as demonstrators attempted to break through the barrier in front of the president's official residence, The Daily Star news portal reported on Tuesday.

Police also used batons and tear gas to disperse protesters, the report added.

Protests against the Bangladeshi government's quota system for public jobs erupted in June and escalated at the beginning of August. Clashes between students, police, and government supporters reportedly left more than 500 people dead, Bangladeshi media reported. Former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned amid the unrest.
