BOTSWANA TO HOLD GENERAL ELECTION ON WEDNESDAY

30/10/2024 04:12 PM

MOSCOW, Oct. 30 (Bernama-Sputnik) - Botswana is holding a general election on Wednesday (Oct. 30) to decide if the ruling Botswana Democratic Party will extend its 58-year span in power, reported Sputnik.

Under the diamond-rich African country's electoral law, voters first elect members of parliament, who then elect the president.

Incumbent President Mokgweetsi Masisi, who is seeking a second term, has focused his campaign around a new 10-year deal that his government secured with global diamond giant De Beers earlier this year. The 63-year-old will be running against three other candidates representing the left-wing Umbrella for Democratic Change coalition, the centre-left Botswana Congress Party, and the populist Botswana Patriotic Front.
