KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 13 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Indian Transformation Unit (MITRA) has approved 14 initiatives worth close to RM100 million (RM99.985 million) this year, the Dewan Rakyat was told today.
Deputy Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister Datuk Seri R. Ramanan said these initiatives cover various aspects, including economic, career, education, welfare and social development.
“Among the initiatives implemented or currently underway are the Malaysian Indian Skills Initiative (MISI) valued at RM10 million; an early education subsidy programme for private kindergartens valued at RM9.38 million; MITRA’s early aid programme for higher learning institution admission worth RM25 million; and the MITRA dialysis subsidy programme valued at RM7.9 million,” he said.
Ramanan, in winding up the debate on the Supply Bill 2025 at the committee level in the Dewan Rakyat today said, MITRA is one of the government’s main pillars in empowering the Indian community.
He said to enhance access to technical and vocational training, courses that can offer wider job opportunities for the Indian community are being managed and provided.
“MITRA will also focus on entrepreneurship development programmes and provide support to increase the Indian community's involvement in business and trade. In addition, support for the gig economy among Indian youths will also be given special attention,” he also said.
“In order to improve the quality of life for the Indian community, the social welfare system must be enhanced. MITRA will play the main role in devising programmes that can reduce the poverty rate within the Indian community.”
