KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 16 (Bernama) – The Embassy of Malaysia in Berlin, Germany harnessed the universal language of food to foster cultural and culinary diplomacy, hosting a diverse array of activities such as cooking workshops and a cultural gala to promote Malaysia's diverse and rich traditions.
In a statement, the embassy said culinary and cultural events organised by the embassy concluded on Nov 12, marking a significant milestone in celebrating and sharing Malaysia’s cultural and culinary heritage with the German community.
“These events showcased the rich cultural and culinary heritage of Malaysia and received an overwhelmingly positive response from attendees. It also aimed to promote cultural exchange and strengthen bilateral ties between Malaysia and Germany,” the statement read.
Under the culinary and cultural diplomacy initiative, the embassy in collaboration with the Palladin Cooking School organised “Lunch and Learn with Dato’ Chef Ismail” on Nov 7 where young budding cooks who are undergoing the training were tasked to learn and prepare Malaysian dishes.
“The event also promoted culinary diplomacy and tourism, highlighting the Negeri Sembilan delicacy "Lemak Cili Padi Daging Salai." This promotion offered an opportunity to savour and present Malaysian cuisine,” the statement read.
The embassy also hosted an exclusive culinary diplomacy event entitled “Culinary Diplomacy: A Session with Dato’ Chef Ismail Ahmad” that evening for international student from the Institute for Cultural (ICD) as well as diplomats.
“This event successfully showcased the diverse and rich culinary traditions of Malaysia, underscoring the powerful role of food in cultural diplomacy and international relations. It also promoted Kurma,” it stated.
The Culinary Diplomacy week continued at Goldhahn and Sampson on Nov 8 where the Embassy organised a cooking workshop with Datuk Chef Ismail Ahmad, where participants enjoyed “Laksa Nyonya Melaka” and “Acar Jelatah.”
Cultural Gala 2024, organised by Malaysia Club Deutschland (MCD), was held in Frankfurt on Nov 2.
Besides that, the embassy also organised “A Malaysian Movie Scope” showcasing the film entitled Ola Bola that was held on Oct 25 and Nov 12 at ICD and Humboldt University Berlin respectively.
The event was held successfully, receiving enthusiastic feedback from the audience, who commended the film’s portrayal of social cohesion and its cinematography.
Ambassador of Malaysia to Germany Datin Paduka Dr Adina Kamarudin said the film was chosen to demonstrate the importance of national unity, racial harmony and national identity.
The embassy said the events drew members of the diplomatic community, local residents and Malaysian diaspora in Germany.
“These activities were lauded for its engaging and authentic representation of Malaysia’s culture, earning praise for its educational and inclusive approach.
“The Embassy of Malaysia in Berlin remains committed to fostering cultural understanding and will continue to host events that promote deeper connections between Malaysia and Germany,” the statement read.
