KUALA TERENGGANU, Nov 20 (Bernama) -- The East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) project in Terengganu has provided employment to 3,476 locals as of September this year, the State Legislative Assembly sitting was told today.

State Infrastructure, Utilities, and Rural Development Committee chairman, Hanafiah Mat said the need for local workers in the mega project depended on the remaining infrastructure work.

“Workers with specific expertise will be absorbed during the operation phase, and the number will be determined based on available vacancies and offers made from time to time,” he said in reply to a question from Dr Riduan Mohd Nor (PAS-Jertih) on the number of local workers involved in the construction of the ECRL project in Terengganu.

In response to Riduan’s supplementary question about social issues affecting ECRL workers and local residents, Hanafiah said that Malaysia Rail Link Sdn Bhd (MRL), as the owner of the project, and China Communications Construction Sdn Bhd (CCC), the main contractor, had implemented various measures to address the concerns.

“Among the steps taken are the establishment of a centralized worker accommodation for Chinese workers, known as the Central Labor Quarters (CLQ), and the introduction of safety systems and procedures that must be followed.

“A joint monitoring system, involving local authorities such as the police and other enforcement agencies, has been set up, along with regular health checks to prevent the spread of infectious diseases,” he said.
